Christian Kolo (b. 1996) is currently in attendance at The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music where he is pursuing a Masters Degree in Screen Scoring. Born in West Bloomfield Michigan, a suburb of Metro-Detroit, Christian began composing music in his sophomore year of High School. He is a graduate of Michigan State University where he studied music composition with Zhou Tian and Ricardo Lorenz, received honors for his academic achievements. Along with composition, Christian is very interested in musicology and music education. He loves making classical/ instrumental music fun and enjoyable for all ages and for those who do not have an extensive musical background. Christian enjoys composing music for all ensembles and skill levels. He especially likes composing for large ensemble which provides a great pallet of color and texture for which he enjoys writing with. Christian also works with film music website, Soundtrack.net as a film music critic.


He first fell in love with the genre of film music, listening and learning from some of the greats. He draws inspiration from composers such as: James Horner, Marc Shaiman, John Debney, John Williams, and Alan Silvestri. Christian has been expanding his knowledge in the great world of absolute music, finding great inspiration from composers like Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Rachmaninoff.

Christian was the winner of the 2016 ACCBDA (Atlantic Coast Conference Band Directors Association) James E. Croft Grant for Young and Emerging Wind Band Composers. He was also a three-time winner of the Dallas Winds Brass Fanfare Competition (2015, 2016, and 2017), the Michigan State Large Ensemble Competition, as well as the runner up in the 2013 Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra Composition Competition. He has also composed many pieces which have been a part of reading sessions at Michigan State University, performed by the MSU orchestra (under Dr. Kevin Noe), the MSU Wind Symphony (under Dr. Kevin Sedatole), The Dali Quartet, and Brooklyn Rider.

Along with concert music, Christian also works as a film composer. His passion for music was born from the world of film and its immersive way of storytelling. Most recently, Christian has been working on numerous short films produced at the University of Southern California Film School. His score for the 2017 short On The Way Up was nominated for Best Original Soundtrack at the Little Wing Film Festival.
